FIXED vs. GROWTH Mindset As A Mature Student.
Should grade 12 University level English be a requirement for entry into all university programs?
I honestly don't know what I think about that.
for myself personally, If I said No, I do not think it should be a requirement. That would be coming from a place of fear and frustration. Possibly my lack of wanting to put in the extra work as a stepping stone to get to where I want to go, which is university.
My Fixed mindset here would be that I am avoiding challenges, wanting to give up because this all feels hard and like being on a conveyer belt.
Being removed from the school system for over 15 years, I don't know if ENG4U prepares me for university any more then the fact that I've already completed high school. Do the demands of university need the framework that grade 12 University English has to offer? I don't know. Should deciding to take alternate courses in high school to explore and pursue other interests have limitations on furthering my education? That again, all depends on how you look at it.
That being said, If I said yes, It is absolutely necessary for grade 12 University English to be a requirement for entry into all university programs. That is coming from a place of deciding that doing what is inconvenient and difficult is a part of the learning process that prepares me for where I'm going, which is university. If I am asking more of myself to pursue a dream, then every step counts.
My Growth mindset here is that I believe I should embrace challenges. That I can give my best effort, lean into feedback and that I can learn if I am willing to put in the hard work. All my choices, past and present, come with consequences, both good and bad. That is a simple fact of life.
For me to move forward now, I need to take a giant step back and pursue grade 12 university level english because I chose not to when I was 17. Maybe what I wrestle with isn't that it should or shouldn't be a requirement for university. Maybe it should never have been an option in the first place. Why can't grade 12 English just be enough?
The answer to the question of weather or not grade 12 university english should be a requirement for entry into university doesn't come easy to me. It feels limiting and still necessary. It is a paradox and a point of tension in my mind.
